Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Shepherd’s Pie Recipe, Shepherd’s Pie is a traditional English dish which is served in family gatherings and other occasions like thanksgiving, Christmas etc. It can be made as simple as you want or you can make it more flavorful by adding more and more ingredients. Shepherd’s pie is made with lamb’s meat but you can use rams meat instead, if u don’t have lamb’s meat easily available.

Following is the traditional shepherd’s pie recipe, for 2 serves.

Ingredients:

1 cup ground mutton,
1 medium size onion,
2 medium potatoes,
50 gm cheese,
2 large size garlic cloves (freshly shredded),
1 inch ginger (freshly shredded),
1 medium carrot (diced),
½ cup peas,
1 cup mutton stock,
½ luke warm milk,
1 egg yolk,
2 tbsp cornflour
2 tbsp oil,
1 tbsp white vinegar,
1 tbsp soya sauce,
1 tsp thyme,
1 tsp black pepper,
½ tsp red chili powder.

Recipe:

Take a frying pan, add oil into it and finely chopped onion. When the onion change its color, add freshly ground ginger and garlic cloves. Sauté for a minute and add minced mutton meat. Fry it well. Then add white vinegar, soya sauce, thyme, salt, red chili powder, black pepper (½ tsp) and fry well until the raw smell disappears. Add the carrot and peas. Now add the stock, cover the lid and cook for 20 minutes on a low heat.

Until the mutton is ready, peal and chop the potatoes into cubes and boil them. After boiling them, mash them well. There should be no lump at all. Into these mashed potatoes, add shredded cheese, ½ tsp black pepper, salt, milk and egg yolk in it and mix it well. Keep mixing it until it keep stuck to the spoon even after lifting.

After 20 minutes check the meat, there will be little stock in it, add cornflour and cook until all the stock is absorbed.

Pour the minced meat into a baking pan and distribute evenly. Then pour the mashed potatoes over it and again distribute evenly. With the help of a fork draw spiral lines on it. With the help of a brush paint it with egg white. Sprinkle with some red chili flakes. Put the baking pan in a pre heat oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 180 degrees. In the last 5 minutes, turn on the upper rod. And your yummilicious shepherd’s pie is ready.

Tips:

Shepherd’s pie is made with mutton however, if you follow the same recipe and only replace the mutton with beef, your cottage pie is ready.

In case you want to make a cottage pie, the time of cooking minced meat will increase.
