The Science of COVID-19 Coronavirus all over the world, Coronaviruses are viruses that cause disease in both humans and birds. These viruses are encapsulated and are given the name corona because of the spikes present on the surface giving the virus a particular crown like structure.
These are single stranded and considered as one among the large sized viruses. Its life cycle follows the same path as other viruses that is, entrance into the host followed by replication and release from that of the host cell machinery.
The corona viruses belong to the order Nidovirales, family Coronaviridae and sub family Coronavirinae. Further, it has four genera namely; Alphacoronavirus , Betacoronavirus , Gammacoronavirus and Deltacoronavirus . The alpha and beta types infect mammals while the gamma and delta primarily infect birds.
Keeping in consideration the current outbreak, only potentially severe human coronaviruses will be continued in this article.
Until now three severe outbreaks of coronaviruses has occured. These were SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV2.
SARS-COV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus) is also a betacoronavirus . This virus outbreak occured in the year 2003. And took about 9% people suffering from this disease.
MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome related coronavirus) is a betacoronavirus. It was first reported in the year 2012, in Saudi Arabia. The outbreak of this disease occured in 2015 and then it spread to about 22 countries. It took about 866 reported lives.
The current coronavirus outbreak COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2). This is also a betacoronavirus .
The outbreak started in 2019 in the Wuhan city of Hubei province, China. At Wuhan Central Hospital Doctor Li Wenliang first raise warning about the COVID-19 outbreak. The COVID-19 is among the most contagious viruses. From the outbreak to this date about 2,256,844 people are effected in which 154,350 reported people have died and 571,851 have recovered. There is no vaccine for it. The patients in the hospitals are kept in isolation and only treated for the symptoms they show.
There are some possibilities about the outbreak initiation. Due to the similarity of the structure of this coronavirus to that of bat coronavirus there may be possibility that it started from the local fish market. Another possibility may be a pathogenic study going out of control and leading to this outbreak. Some also consider it a biological warfare. Now when the whole humanity is at stake, whatever the possibilities are, our primary duty is to keep ourselves and others safe without panicking.
(Dedicated to Doctor Li Wenliang and his family. Doctor Li Wenliang worked as a physician at Wuhan Central Hospital. He was an ophthalmologist. A husband and father of one kid, from raising the awareness to treating the COVID-19 patients and then fighting the disease himself lost his life at a young age of only 33 years).
CoronaVirus infectious disease is caused by SARS–C0V-2. One of the new type of coronavirus detected in China in year 2019. Medicine researchers say that the effect of this disease is low mild in 80% of patients, severe in 13% patients and critical in 6% patients.
The name COVID-19 is abbreviated. Apparently
- “CO” stands for Corona.
- “VI” stands for Virus
- “D” stands for Disease
- “19” is for year 2019, as it was first identified in late 2019.
Most Common Symptoms
- High Fever
- Dry Cough
Other Symptoms may also include.
- Sore Throat
- Aches & Pains
- Shortness of Breath
In critical cases CoronaVirus can cause severe Pneumonia or multiple organ failure and can leads to death.
- Be Careful
- Be Alert
- Be Supportive
- Be Kind
- Be Ready to fight COVID-19
