Zul-Hijja or Dhul-Hijja Holy Month

Zul-Hijja or Dhul-Hijja Holy Month is the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the month in which Hajj is performed. Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to the city of Mecca (KSA), performed by muslim who is physically and economically stable (detailed Hajj article is present in the category Islam).

The word Zul-hijj means the month of Hajj or pilgrimage. It is also the month in which Eid-ul-Azha (read detail article) and sacrifice of the animals is done. The Arafat day is also in this month. It is the month of worship. That’s why this month is very sacred in Islam.

Fasting and Worship:

In the month of Zul-hijj, it is recommended to fast in the first 9 days of the month and then among these days, fasting on 9th of Zul-hijj is highly recommended. If a person cannot fast for all the 9 days, he should try to fast on the 9th Zul-hijj which is also the Arafat day.

Who ever fasts in these 9 days and especially on the Arafat day Allah will grant him great rewards. According to hadith, “The Prophet of Allah (S.A.W.W) said: There are no days more beloved to Allah that he be worshipped in them than the ten days of Zul-hijj, fasting every day of them is equivalent to fasting a year; and standing every nighy of them (in Salaah) is equivalent to standing on the Night of Qadr”. (Tirmizi, 758).

Besides these 9 days of fasting, offering Tahajjud in the first 10 days is also recommended. It is the month of Ibadah (worship) and a chance of improving Nimaz and giving charity.

On the 9th of Zul-hijj, from fajar prayer Takbeerat-e-tashreeq should be recited, especially once after every faraz nimaz. Takbeerat-e-tashreeq are;

الله اكبر الله اكبر لا اله الا الله والله أكبر و لله الحمد

These Takbeerat should be recited aloud.

On 10th of Zul-hijj, the Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated. After the eid prayer, animals are sacrificed in the name of Allah. The person who intend to perform the sacrifice should not cut his nails or hair from 1st of Zul-hijj to the time when sacrifice has been made. The sacrificial meat is distributed among the poor and relatives. One part of the sacrificial meat is for own use.
